Only two species of snapping turtles are still alive i.e. Common Snapping Turtle and Alligator Snapping Turtle.

Seven species of snapping turtle are now extinct.

They are also sometimes referred to as just snappers.

They spend almost all of their lives in water with an exception of female turtles venturing onto open land for nesting purposes.

 

 

The seven extinct genera of the snapping turtles are Chelydrops, Emarginachelys, Acherontemys, Protochelydra, Macrocephalochelys, Chelydropsis, and Planiplastron.

The Alligator Snapping Turtle is larger in size than the Common Snapping Turtle.

Alligator snapping turtles can stay underwater for 40 to 50 minutes before surfacing to breathe.

Alligator snapping turtles can reach a carapace length of 26 inches and can weigh over 100 kilograms.

Alligator snapping turtles are the largest freshwater turtles in North America.
