Interesting Facts about Hawksbill Sea Turtles

Hawksbill turtle is a small, omnivore turtle found throughout the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

Their shells change color slightly according to water temperature.

Their heads end in a sharp point which resembles a bird's beak and thus the name hawksbill.

They grow only 24 to 45 in long and weigh 45 kg to 68 kg (100 pounds to 150 pounds ).

 

 

Did you know that the younger hawksbill turtles are unable to dive deep?

Young turtles also have a heartshaped upper shell.

They have two visible claws on each flipper.

Hawksbill sea turtle is the only species in its genus.

This species of turtles is currently endangered.

Despite the protection they receive from their hard shells, these turtles fall prey to large fish, crocodiles, sharks, octopuses and of course humans.

Their food include jellyfish, seagrasses, sponges, mollusks, crustaecens, sea urchins etc.

They lay a clutch of 140 eggs. These eggs hatch at night after about two months time.

Hawksbill turtles normally take about 30 or more years to reach adulthood.
