Iinteresting Facts about Leopard Seals

Leopard seals are the only seals that prey upon other seals.

They are the largest of the true Antarctic seals. They can grow up to 3.5 meters in length and can weigh up to over 380 kg.

They are named for their black-spotted coat. They are fierce predators and are sometimes called sea leopard.

Killer whale is the only known natural predator of these seals, while they mainly prey upon penguins. They attack penguins when the penguins dive in water. They catch penguins by their feet and then beat them back and forth on the surface of water unless the skin peels away, then they eat the carcass.

Leopard seals will also eat fish, squid, & krill. They are solitary animals.

They have excellent senses of sight and smell under water. Also, they can live for about 26 or more years.

Females can give birth at age of six or more. They give birth to a single pup after a gestation of about 9 months. Newborns weigh around 40kg.
