Interesting Facts about Komodo Dragons

Komodo dragons are the largest lizards on earth reach. They can grow over 10 feet long and weigh over 300 pounds.

They use their tongues to smell.

They are found only in Indonesia in the wild.

Female Komodo dragons can reproduce on their own, i.e. they lay fertile eggs without the help of male dragons.

The largest komodo dragon ever recorded weighed 366 pounds.

They have been around for millions of years, but scientists started studying them in the twentieth century.

A Komodo dragon has 60 teeth which are frequently replaced. These teeth can measure up to 2.5 cm in length.

Komodo dragons can live for more than 30 years in the wild.

 

 

 

It is the only lizard to kill and eat a prey larger than itself.

They can run at a speed of 11 mph but only for a very short period.

They can see as far away as about 1000 feet. They also have the ability to see in color.

Their bite can be lethal due to the presence of large amounts of bacteria in it. However, their poisonous saliva don't harm other dragons in case of a fight.

Adult males can eat up to 240 pounds in a single meal, which is 80 percent of their body weight.

They lay a clutch of up to 30 eggs. Them eggs hatch after an incubation period of 7 to 8 months.

Adult komodo dragons will sometimes prey upon the juveniles.

Komodo dragons are excellent swimmers.
