Facts about Big Blue Octopuses

Binomial name of the big blue octopus is Octopus cyanea and they belong to family Octopodidae.

It is also commonly called the Day Octopus and Cyane's Octopus. They occur in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

They are large octopus, growing 16 cm in mantle length with arms which grow at least 80 cm.

As its name "day octopus" suggests, they hunt during the daytime and thus have amazing ability to camouflage themselves. They can change overall color and texture of their skin.

Under normal circumstances the big blue octopus has a brown color with dark oval patches. It feeds on shrimps, crabs, small fishes and bivalves.

When a day octopus couple mates, it does so by staying at arms length because females are known to eat males after copulation.

They are not poisonous and are fished in their native range.
