Facts about Sooty Mangabey

 

 

 

The Sooty Mangabey is an Old World monkey.

It has quite a few common names which are: White Mangabey, White-collared Mangabey and White-naped Mangabey.

It is found in forests from Senegal east to Ghana.

The head and body length of males is 47 to 67 cm.

The head and body length of female Sooty Mangabey is 45 to 60 cm.

Length of their tail ranges from 40 to 80 cm.

Male Sooty Mangabey weigh from 7 - 12 kg.

The weight of female Sooty Mangabeys range anywhere from 4.5 - 7 kg.

Their young are born after the gestation period of about 6 months.

It is believed that a strain of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) jumped from this species to humans to become the HIV-2 virus.

Their range is from Sanegal to Gabon.

Sooty Mangabey is omnivorous whose diet includes primarily fruits and seeds, sometimes feeding on small animals.

Their diet include palm nuts, seeds, fruit and leaves.

These monleys live in social groups of four to twelve individuals, but occasionally groups as large as 95 individuals have been recorded.
