Facts about Golden Snub-nosed Monkeys
The Golden Snub-nosed Monkey is an old world monkey. It is endemic to a small area in temperate, mountainous forests of central China, primarily around the Sichuan basin. The Chinese name of this monkey is Sichuan Golden Hair Monkey. Snow occurs frequently within its range and it can withstand colder average temperatures than any other non-human primates. Its population estimates range from 8,000 to 15,000.[2009] Their noses are, as the name suggests, flattened and set back from the muzzle. The wide nostrils face forwards and there are two small flaps of skin above the nostrils that nearly touch the forehead. The Golden Snub-nosed Monkey can mate year round, but August, September and October are the peak of mating. Their head and body length is 570 to 760 mm (57 to 76 cm). Their tail length is 510 - 720 mm (51 to 72 cm). Male Snub-nosed monkeys weigh 15 to 39 kg. Female Snub-nosed monkeys weigh 6.5 to 10 kg. They have a gestation period of six months. Female Golden Snub-nosed monkeys mature sexually at 4 to 5 years old. They feed mainly on pine needles and young firs, but they also take bamboo shoots, leaves, buds and fruits. Male Golden Snub-nosed monkeys mature sexually when they are 7 years of age. Females mature sexually at 4 - 5 years old. Females normally produce one young after a gestation of about 7 months. |
