Interesting Facts about Wombats
Wombats dig burrows using their powerful claws and teeth. Their burrows are known as warrens. These warrens can have a a total length of up to 650 feet because wombats dig various sleeping chambers, entrances and exits. Did you know that they have their pouch at the back of their body. This distinctive feature allows them to dig tunnels without gathering dirt into their pouches. Wombats have a very slow metabolism. They take about 2 weeks to digest a meal. This helps them stay alive in arid conditions. An unofficial holiday, called Wombat Day is observed on 22nd Onctober, at the beginning of the traditional aboriginal spring planting season. |
