Interesting Facts about Chipmunks

There are 25 recognized species of chipmunks. With an exception of Asia’s Tamias sibiricus, all the chipmunks species are found in North America.

Chipmunks hibernate, but they do not store fat like other animals. Instead they slowly gnaw away their cache of nuts and seeds throughout the winter.

They give birth to a litter of two to eight, after a gestation of 30 days.

Depending upon the species, chipmunks can weigh anywhere from 1 to 5 ounces.

Chipmunks are in fact small stripped squirrels.

They have an average lifespan of 2 to 3 years in the wild.
