Fish Facts
They have been on our earth for more than 450 million years, even before the dinosaurs started to roam around. There are about 40 known species of the flying fish, which is a fish with thin wings. These wings allow it to jump and glide in a way that it seems like it is flying, but in fact it is not. The flying fish is capable of continuing its flight, they have been recorded stretching out their flights with consecutive glides spanning distances up to 1,312 feet (400 meters).
Some fish can swim backwards. The diet of the flying fish mainly consists of small crustaceans and planktons. Stingrays use electric sensors to find food. This enables it to find its prey even if it is burried in the sand. The flying fish are attracted to light. This habit allows fishermen to catch them easily. At night many Parrotfish secrete and then sleep inside a mucous cocoon. This cocoon protects it from parastes and snails, also helps it warn about the presence of predators and adds a horrible taste and smell to the parrot fish thus keeping the predators at a safe distance. Some fish species are able to change their sex. Clown fish is a classic example of this, they are all born males and the dominant males change their sex during the course of life. Bettas breathe air. If they don't breathe air they will drown. Male betta fish builds a bubble nest for the arrival of eggs. The Salmon fish spends most of its time in the ocean but comes back to the freshwater for spawning. Oils from orange roughy which is a deep-sea fish, are used in making shampoos. A group of jelly fish is often referred to as smack. The eggs of an Oscar fish will normally take two to three days to hatch. "School" is the name given to a group of fish. The cavefish are blind but can detec vibrations and odor very well. The Oscar fish change colors when they begin mating. The Oscar fish would lay around a thousand eggs at a time. Fish are cold-blooded. The study of history of fishes is known as ichthyology. The jellyfish are made up of over 95% water. Body of a jelly fish lack a skeletal structure or the outer shell. A jellyfish has no brain. A jellyfish neither posess blood nor a nervous system. Mouth of a jellyfish is located on the underside of its bell and that is the only opening for its digestive system. They jellyfish take food in through its mouth which is digested in a sack-like structure. Then they pass their waste out through their mouths. The Megamouth shark which is the rarest of the shark species, was discovered in 1976. Experts believe that whale sharks may have a life span of up to 150 years. Eggs of the Port Jacson sharks look like a corkscrew and they stick to rock crevices. Sharks are able to see almost as well behind as they can see in front. The smallest shark species is the dwarf shark which averages 4 in in length. Swell sharks are able to swallow water and swell themselves up to appear larger in the eyes of predators, thus the name swell sharks. |
