Facts about Angler Fish

Angler fish are very good fishermen!
There is a rod that extends out beyond the front of the Angler Fish. On the end of this rod is a "lure" that resembles a worm. In an attempt to attract prey, the Angler Fish will cause the worm-like object to wiggle. Since visibility is a problem in extremely deep water, light producing bacteria will help illuminate the worm. The unsuspecting prey approach the lure in hopes of a nice meal, instead they become a meal themselves!

They are named Angler for their method of catching their prey.

Another very unusual adaptation in anglerfish is their sexual dimorphism. The males are very small in comparison with the females, and live as permanent parasites on the female. The male attaches himself, by biting, to the body of the female. His mouth fuses with her skin, and the bloodstreams of the two fishes become connected. The male is now totally dependent on the female for nourishment. In fact, the male begins to degenerate. His eyes grow smaller and he eventually loses them. His internal organs disappear. The male becomes simply a source of sperm.

Angler fish may grow to a length of 200cm. 90cm long angler fish are comonly found.
