General Facts about Mountains

Mount Everest in the Hamalayas is the tallest peak on Earth. It is 8,850meters (29,035 feet) high.

Mountains make up about one-fifth of the world's landscape, and provide homes to at least one-tenth of the world's people.

The world's highest mountain, from its base on the ocean floor, is Mauna Kea, on Hawaii. It is 10,203 m ( 33,474 ft ) high but only 4,205 m ( 13,796 ft ) is above sea level. As heights of mountains are measured from the sea levels, therefore it is not considered the tallest mountain.

The tallest known mountain in the solar system is Olympus Mons. It is located on the planet Mars.

Mountains occur more often in oceans than on land; some islands are the peaks of mountains coming out of the water.

There are mountains under the surface of the sea!

Some of the most deadliest volcanoes are also under the surface of the sea.

All 14 mountains which are more than 8000 meters high are in Asia.
