Facts about Oranges

Orange is very rich in vitamin C.

It is technically a hesperidia, or kind of a berry.

About 20 per cent of the total crop of oranges is sold as whole fruit; the remainder is used in preparing orange juice, extracts, and preserves.

The sour, or Seville, orange has a bitter taste and is rarely eaten fresh.

Seville orange was introduced to the Mediterranean region by the Arabs about the 10th century, and the sweet orange was introduced by Genoese traders in the 15th century to the West.

Florida is the number one citrus producer, producing 70% of the U.S. crop, with 90% of that going into juice.

Orange juice has 207% Vitamin C.

Brazil is the biggest producer of both oranges and orange juice in the world.

Florida oranges may be greener than California oranges because the night temperatures in Florida are warmer, which causes more chlorophyll to migrate into the peel; they are still ripe and sweet though.

Did you know that if you plant a single seed of an orange you will probably get more than one plant growing from it.
